WB, Leonardo DiCaprio set to Produce Live-Action Akira
Possibly one of the most influential anime to hit the Western shores, Akira is finally going to be made into a live-action feature film. The movie adaptation will be based on the original 6-volume manga first published in 1982 by Katsuhiro Otomo and will be made into 2 movies covering 3 of the books each with the first movie planned for a Summer 2009 release.
First time director Ruairi Robinson (http://www.ruairirobinson.com, imdb) will be helming the project while Gary Whitta (wiki) will be writing the adaptation. The film will be produced through DiCaprio’s company, Appian Way and Warner Brothers. Robinson, an Oscar nominated director, wrote and directed a sci-fi short titled “The Silent City” which can be viewed from his website.
I’m pretty excited about this project as Akira was one of my first post-apocalyptic anime feature with a very strong cyberpunk theme. It was certainly groundbreaking in terms of its production quality and storyline when it first released. With the right budget and right people, this could be one hell of an epic cyberpunk movie of the decade.
