Disney to Go Anime
Several sources have picked up news that Disney has formed a partnership with Toei Animation (ann) studio to produce animes for the Asian market. Their first project will be a short animated children series entitled “Fireball” which features robots in the distant future. Fireball will be released sometime in April this year. There are also plans of a joint venture with Madhouse Studio (ann) for the remake of Lilo and Stitch with a Japanese setting. The original Lilo and Stitch(2002) tells the story of an orphaned girl who befriends a cuddly-looking alien fugitive from space.
So has Disney finally given in to Japanimation ? Disney has been distributing films by Studio Ghibli(ann) which produced the Academy Award winning “Spirited Away” and more recently “Tales From the Earth Sea”. Their latest move shows that there is a growing trend in producing animation that adapts to the Asian culture.
It will be interesting to see how a Disney produced anime will fare against their own production with the remake of the Lilo and Stitch movie.
Tell us what you think. Do you think an animeized version of Lilo and Stitch is gonna be better than the original ? Or would another title be better suited for the anime treatment ?
