I’m Making the Switch

I’m getting a Mac. I’ve always been a PC user ever since my parents bought the first computer for the household. But just like any other long time PC users, I’m just as curious to find out how its like to be using a Mac for a change. My experience with Macs started during my university days mainly because they were the most easily available computers that you can find around the lab. This was back when they’re still running MacOS 9, so thats a good 7-8 years ago. Since then I’ve been keeping up with the development of the Mac platform.
My work involves developing Ruby on Rails applications on a Linux platform. Prior to this I was developing web applications in a Microsoft shop. So you could imagine the transitioning phase was quite a nightmare for me in the beginning. However it didn’t take me long to get adjusted to the the way of the penguin, where you actually get to tinker with almost every part of the system although sometimes you’d wish you didn’t have to touch them in the first place. The MacOS X is really just another Unix variant. Eye candy aside, there’s a solid BSD-based Unix operating system sitting under the hood. Some argue that the Mac’s user interface is not any easier or friendlier than Window’s but its still way ahead of those available on the Linux, and lets not forget that the MacOS was the first commercially successful GUI based operating system. So what could be better than a solid Unix-based system with a UI thats been developed and perfected over so many years ?
Most Ruby developers seem to prefer working with Macs because they offer several applications that increases their productivity which is not available on other platforms. My Mac is scheduled to arrive in the middle of May, so in the mean time I’m curious to know people who made the switch and how their experiences were like. I’d be happy if anyone wishes to share any tips or suggestions for an impending switcher like me ![]()

Psychoric: I’m already using Linux in office ma. So still count as PC rite ? Havent fully become traitor yet
QuaChee: I’ll probably post up my experiences with the Mac once I’ve got the machine. The Mac prices are now comparable with branded PCs nowadays, so its really a matter of choice. You should test drive one and see if you like it.
