Hayao Miyazaki’s Ponyo on the Cliff

Hayao Miyazaki’s latest work, Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea, has been breaking box office records in Japan. With ticket sales closing in on 1.5 billion yen over the opening weekend, it still failed to take over his 2001 Spirited Away with the highest opening ever. Ponyo on the Cliff is a light hearted story about a young boy, Sousoke, who by chance met a half-goldfish/half-human mermaid named Ponyo. Ponyo soon fell in love with Sousoke and yearns to be human and brings all sorts of chaos in the sleepy town that Sousoke lives in.
The story is inspired by Hans Christian Anderson’s “The Little Mermaid” and director Hayao Miyazaki also revealed that he drew inspirations from Wagner’s “The Ring of the Nibelung” and Natsume Sousuke’s “The Gate”. Ponyo on the Cliff also marks the return of Miyazaki’s signature hand drawn animation. His previous works uses CGI to enhance some of the scenes but Ponyo uses traditional water color technique with a very vivid and vibrant color scheme. Ponyo’s definitely a refreshing change after the abysmal Gedo Senki (Tales from the Earthsea) adaptation. Check out the official trailer below.
