Streamyx : Your broadband journey stucks here

I know I promised more posts since the start of the year, but thanks to our good ol’ friend Streamyx, my net connection at home has been excruciatingly slow. I could hardly load up my own site, let alone update it. Streamyx, unfortunately for us Malaysians, monopolizes the broadband market in the country and because of this, broadband is sadly very expensive and can be very unreliable. There aren’t many local broadband players. Maxis Broadband which provides both wired and wireless packages only offers a very limited service coverage. P1 WiMax’s suffers from the same coverage issues but provides one of the faster bandwidth package compared with Streamyx and Maxis.
Now on the other hand, let us do a quick comparison with our neighbours from down under. We’ll use SingNet for our study since they’re one of the main ISPs in Singapore.
SingNet’s 1Mbps package costs SGD 33.63 (~ RM 82) per year, but if you sign up for 2 years, it’ll only set you back at SGD 22.90 yearly (~ RM60) which is still cheaper than Streamyx’s monthly RM 99 for a year.
Going up the scale, SingNet offers up to 8Mbps. Let’s see how that package fare against Streamyx’s fastest offering.
SingNet 8Mbps @ SGD 45 (~ RM 110) for 2 years contract
Streamyx 4Mbps @ RM 268 yearly
So yeah, we’re basically being short changed here. I guess we’re gonna be stuck with Streamyx for a little while and hopefully the other ISPs will catch up with their promises to provide us with a viable alternative. So how is the broadband in your region ? Do you pay more for slower and unreliable service like us too ?
