Mac Experience : Mozy Backup

I’ve never been a big fan of backups until I found Time Machine. You could probably tell by my previous write up on Time Machine here. Backups should never be a tedious chore requiring lots of patience and time and yet they are your last resort when your machine starts to act up on you. My current routine involves plugging in my Time Machine drive every 1-2 days at work or at home as well as having Mozy backup running in the background.

Mozy is an online backup/storage service which currently offers 2Gb of backup storage for free when you sign up. The thing I like best about Mozy is that it quietly runs in the background and performs the backups seamlessly. To start using Mozy, you just need to configure your initial backup sets. I choose to backup only critical files like my contacts, emails and other files that I work on a daily basis. Mozy comes with a default set of backup sets for stuff like emails and contacts or you could fine tune your backup by selecting specific files and folders for backup. Backup frequency can be configured to be fixed on schedule or whenever your machine is left idling. Mozy allows you to restore your backups using its own interface, via web or have a DVD of the backup burnt and sent to you at an additional charge.

Clients for both Windows XP and MacOS X are available for download once you have signed up for their service. You can install Mozy on more than one machine, Windows or Mac, but they will all share the maximum 2Gb for your account unless you are registering several accounts with them. Mozy’s worth a try, doesn’t hurt to have a backup backup :)

Lucky☆Star

Enter the craziness that is Lucky☆Star. I managed to catch the first episode of Lucky Star a few days back and I’m really drawn in by the opening sequence. Its just so zany and energetic with the hyperactive and super kawaii Lucky Star cast doing their dance. Lucky Star features Aya Hirano as the voice of the lead character in the series, Konata Izumi. I’ll leave you with the opening sequence and hopefully it brightens your day as it did mine :D

I’ll try to squeeze in some time to finish the series and do a review :P

Voltron Live Action Remake

Via AnimeNewsNetwork

The Variety entertainment news source reports that New Regency, a production company based at Fox, no longer has plans for the live-action Voltron film project, while another company, Ryan Kavanaugh’s Relativity Media, is negotiating to pick up the project. If Relativity Media signs onto the remake of the 1980s animated robot series, it will finance and produce the film with a lower budget and the use of technologies similar to those used in Zack Snyder’s adaptation of Frank Miller’s 300 comic. Relativity Media produced or co-produced over fifty projects in the last three years, including Ghost Rider, The Forbidden Kingdom, and Wanted.

Talks of a live action Voltron has been around for quite a while. With news of the project switching hands between studios and working on a smaller budget, one can only hope that it doesn’t turn out to be a straight to DVD release. Since we have Voltron, Robotech and Transformer live action remakes .. where’s my GUNDAM live action project ?

The Mac Experience : QuickSilver

One of the first thing that I installed on my Mac was Quicksilver from Blacktree. I’ve heard so much about QuickSilver that I’ve actually downloaded it to my PC before my Mac even arrived. Once loaded, I can see what the fuss is all about. QuickSilver is essentially a launcher application. Its core strength is its ability to memorize and adapt to your frequently used applications and documents and lets you effortlessly launch by simply invoking it and typing a few keywords.

Once activated, QS presents you with a simple dialog. As you type a few letters of the application or document that you wish to run, it will automatically seek the closest match to what you are looking for and displays an icon of it. By default, the action that is associated with it is to Execute the application or Opening the document, but once you hit Tab, you can begin typing Action that you wish to perform. QS manages this by indexing all your applications and documents for faster response.

In the example above, I entered “Hatsu” and it automatically highlighted the file Hatsune Miku.jpg for me. As I hit the Tab button and begin typing the letters “Co”, QS defaults the action to Copy To. Finally, I complete it by typing “Pic” and it displays my Pictures folder. Once I hit Enter, it will copy the image to the Pictures folder. QS is highly extensible and there are many more advanced plugins that you can download to add more actions and features to it. QuickSilver is without a doubt very intuitive once you have mastered the basic idea. It combines the flexibility of Command Line Interfaces coupled with the usability of GUIs in a very unique package.

Sneak Peek at my RX-178

After several months of delay, I’ve finally pieced together my latest model…. the RX-178 Gundam Mark II. I had originally planned to post some progress pics but unfortunately my camera took a dive in the ocean and was just repaired recently. I’m still testing out some shots with my DIY light box for the photo shoot and you probably notice there’s an awful lot of dust collected on it since I didn’t groom it before the shots :P. Anyway the full gallery should be up in a couple days more while I try to fix my lighting and strike up some cool poses.

Gundam SD FA-78 and RX-78 GP01 Papercraft

Via PaperKraft

Here’s another cool project from PaperKraft, the concept design of the Full Armor FA-78 Gundam. It features a both a shoulder cannon and dual barrel arm mounted hand beam gun. Little is known about this Gundam though. But check out the below..

This is an impressive papercraft version of the Gundam RX78 GP01 “Zephyranthes”. It has very detailed mechanics and even features what appears to be the retractable shield. Check out the links to grab the downloads.

Site Updates

Had a long weekend overhaul on my site. I’ve just upgraded my WordPress engine upto version 2.6 along with all the plugins that I’ve been using. I was a few versions behind but thankfully the upgrade process was smooth and painless. If you happen to notice anything kooky about the site, do let me know and I’ll try to get it fixed ASAP. I’m now using iPhotos to upload my gallery to the site via a smart little plugin, this is much more intuitive than how I used to do in Windows. Speaking of which, I haven’t been writing much about my Mac, so I guess I’m due to write another snippet about my Mac experience. :P Enjoy your visit to the site.
